Days don't get much better than this on the Outer Banks and to top it all off Toothless the Fire Breathing Dragon was flying at the Kitty Hawk Kites Rogallo Kite Festival.
For adults without children and anyone living under a rock since 2010, Toothless and his rider, Hiccup, were the heroes of Dreamwork's 2010 movie "How to Train Your Dragon." With the release of "How to Train Your Dragon 2" due next week, the timing was perfect for Kitty Hawk Kites to fly the massive replica of Toothless.
There were only five of the kites produced, and the Rogallo Festival just happened at the right time to take advantage of the promotion .
The Rogallo Kite Festival celebrates Francis Rogallo, a longtime Southern Shores resident who was a true pioneer in aviation wing design. Mr. Rogallo developed a flexible wing that is the basic design of all hang gliders, paragliders, stunt kites and the modern parachutes.
The design - rightfully called the Rogallo Wing - was one of numerous aviation patents that Mr. Rogallo held. Mr. Rogallo passed away in 2009.
Sponsored by Kitty Hawk Kites, the Rogallo Festival is held at Jockey's Ridge State Park every June and is a celebration of kite flying of every configuration.
