Directions To The OBX
The Outer Banks is a barrier island that stretches over 200 miles long! The most northern point of the Outer Banks that you can reach without 4-wheel drive is Corolla NC. If you plan to go any further north towards Corova you will need 4-wheel drive. The most southern point of the Outer Banks that is reachable without a boat or ferry is Hatteras Island. If you plan to go any further south towards Ocracoke Island you will need to take a ferry that is operated by the NCDOT.
The OBX is comprised of 3 counties, Dare County, Hyde County and Currituck County. A list of towns on the Outer Banks from North to South are as follows: Corolla, Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, Manteo, Wanchese, Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Hatteras Island, Frisco, Ocracoke Island, and Portsmouth Island. You will need a car to navigate the island and get around with ease however, there are other forms of transportation available such as taxis, limo services, rental cars and location based app services.

AIRPORT INFORMATION
The closest major airport to the Outer Banks is in Norfolk, Virginia. From the Norfolk International Airport you will need to rent a car, hire a shuttle or limo service. The airport is close the main highway I -64 and approximate driving time from the Norfolk airport to Kitty Hawk is 1.5 hours.
There is an International Airport in Newport News, VA. Serving the Hampton Roads area, the airport is located in the heart of shopping centers and restaurants making it easy travelling for those who need to take a break before or after their flight. There are hotels in the area for early flights out. It is about 2.5 hours driving time to get the Outer Banks from Newport News in non-seasonal traffic.
A little further away here in North Carolina is the Raleigh-Durham Intl Airport. The drive time is about 3.5 hours. You can make plans to visit and enjoy this major region of North Carolina known as the Research Triangle before or after your trip to the beach.
There are three small airports located on the Outer Banks: Dare County Regional Airport, First Flight Airport and Currituck Regional Airport of the three the largest is Dare County Regional, during the summer months you will see many guided air tours take off from this area.
