Slow Going on Wright Memorial Bridge

Ok, worse than advertised. The closure of the outbound Wright Memorial Bridge is going to create some headaches on weekends here on the Outer Banks. Just an unofficial number, but my odometer had traffic backed up 3.5 miles in Kitty Hawk on Sunday afternoon.

The maintenance is needed since a ride across the bridge is more like a boat ride on an angry sea than a smooth ride on a bridge, so the replacement of the expansion joints and the repaving are somewhat overdue.

Obviously NCDOT was hoping to avoid the summer rush, but with beautiful weather on tap of the next week or so, lots of things to do on the weekends, it looks like Friday through Sunday, there are going to be some backups getting on and off the Outer Banks.

Not summer backups, but still tack on an extra half hour or so to your trip just to be safe.

Next weekend is sort of the calm before the storm when it comes to events. The Dare County Arts Council will hold their annual Artrageous celebration of the arts, community and kids at Rec Park in Kill Devil Hills. But thatâåÛåªs probably the biggest event scheduled for this coming weekend.

The following weekend things get moving with the Outer Banks Bluegrass Festival Thursday through Saturday and the Outer Banks Charity Classic Tennis Tournament starting on Thursday and wrapping up on Sunday.

NCDOT has scheduled mid May as a completion date.
