To almost everyone living on the Outer Banks, Chef Pok is a name that evokes great food, innovative dishes and a good time. Pok, who has been with the Outer Banks Brewing Station for a number of years, grew up on the Outer Banks, learned his craft in the Thai Room-an excellent Thai restaurant in Kill Devil Hills, and honed his skills over the years.
And now Pok is moving on. Last week with his mother Aung and brother Art, he opened Pok's Art in the Dune Shops in Kitty Hawk. Carry out only at this point, the menu is like a trip around the Pacific Rim.
There are, of course, the Thai dishes the Thai Room is so well known for. But there is also Japanese robata, some Korean dishes, Chinese and a some offerings from Hawaii.
I had the special today-seared yellowfin tuna on skewers over jasmine rise and vegetable. It was amazing.
The plan calls for more fusion dishes-a blending of Pok's skills with traditional European foods with his Asian background as the summer goes on.
Right now Pok is finishing up at the Brewing Station, although he will continue to consult throughout the summer.
