Music Highlights OBX Columbus Day Weekend

Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds at the Mustang Music Festival. That was an amazing weekend of music. Columbus Day Weekend on the Outer Banks has become the music happening place on the East Coast for the past few years and the 2015 Mustang Music Festival and Duck Jazz Festival exceeded expectation.Friday and Saturday kicked things off at the Mustang Music Festival at the Whalehead Club and it seemed to be the best yet. It sure helped things along with perfect weather on Friday, and even though Saturday was overcast with a cool breeze, the winds held off.Picking a "Best Of" from the event doesn't seem possible but there we'll cast a vote anyway. Friday we're going with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band . . . think New Orleans street music with a funky beat and the image is halfway to what those musicians can do with music.Saturday the headliners were The Nth Band and Keller Williams, but we're going with Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds out of NYC. Funk, blues, rock and high energy done with excellent musicianship.Sunday it was the Duck Jazz Festival and another amazing day of music-free music on the Duck Town Green, which makes it even better. Maceo Parker was the headliner; bandmaster and sax player for James Brown for a number of years, his style is pure funk with a lot of fun. Before he came out, Bria Skonberg hit the stage with some of the most amazing vocals and trumpet playing. What really made both performances-Skonberg and Parker's-were the musicians performing with them. Put the weekend into the calendar for next year. Both event are very family friendly, so there's not excuse for missing them.
