Marathon Weekend on the Outer Banks

Here it is, VeteranâåÛåªs Day Weekend, so it must be time for the Outer Banks Marathon. 8th Annual this year and what has happened as the event has grown it has become sort of a mini festival of running.

ThereâåÛåªs a fitness expo, six races of varying lengths--Saturday features an 8K, 5K and 1.2 mile family fun run and SundayâåÛåªs the big day with the Marathon, half marathon and even a 6K run thrown in.

The Marathon race course is beautiful--except for a six or seven mile stretch in Nags Head along the Bypass, itâåÛåªs all through maritime forests and residential neighborhoods. Mostly flat, although the 80âåÛåª arch of the Washigton Baum Bridge going into Mateo at mile 23 is reported to be a heartbreaker.

The event began as a fundraiser for the Dare Education Foundation and they continue to benefit from the all the participation. Although a good education doesnâåÛåªt always guarantee a good speller. Something about the sign on Kitty Hawk Road advising it would be closed for the âåÛåÏMarothonâåÛå (see image with article). It did get corrected, but it was fun while it lasted.

HereâåÛåªs a great article about the Marathon in RunnerâåÛåªs World.
