What Each OBX Rental Location Means

Oceanfront Rentals

Oceanfront rentals are the ultimate way to experience the Outer Banks. These homes are located directly on the oceanfront in areas like Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, and South Nags Head. Guests can enjoy unobstructed ocean views, direct beach access, sunrise views, and the sound of waves just steps from the door.

Semi-Oceanfront Rentals

Semi-oceanfront rentals offer a close-to-the-beach location without being directly oceanfront. These homes may be one house back from the ocean with no roads to cross, or they may be located on the west side of and fronting the Beach Road, also known as NC 12, depending on the town and location.

In Duck and Southern Shores, semi-oceanfront homes are often located directly on the west side of NC 12, offering partial to full ocean views and short walks to the shoreline. In Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, and Nags Head, many semi-oceanfront homes sit along the west side of Beach Road with quick beach access. In South Nags Head, semi-oceanfront homes may be located just behind oceanfront properties or dunes.

Oceanside Rentals

Oceanside rentals provide the charm of being close to the beach while often offering more privacy and value than an oceanfront location. These homes are on the ocean side of major roads but are not directly oceanfront.

In Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, and Nags Head, oceanside homes are generally located between the ocean and US 158. In Duck and Southern Shores, they may be between the ocean and NC 12 or just west of NC 12 but still closer to the ocean than the sound. In South Nags Head, oceanside homes are situated between the ocean and NC 12, also known as Cape Hatteras National Park Road.

All oceanside homes are set back at least two houses from the ocean. Exact proximity varies, and in some areas you may need to cross a two-lane road, so reviewing each listing’s map and details is the best way to understand beach access.

Golf Course Rentals

Golf course rentals are a great option for guests who want a peaceful setting with scenic views. These homes are located in the Sea Scape Golf Course area near Milepost 2 in Kitty Hawk. Whether you are planning time on the green or simply want a quieter neighborhood setting, golf course rentals offer a unique Outer Banks vacation experience.

Soundside Rentals

Soundside rentals offer a quieter, more relaxed setting closer to the sound than the ocean. These homes are popular with guests who enjoy peaceful neighborhoods, sunsets, and easy access to both the sound and the ocean. Sound views may be possible, but they are not guaranteed, so be sure to check each property listing for details.

Soundfront Rentals

Soundfront rentals are located directly on the sound or very close to the sound, with no properties between your rental and the water. Many soundfront homes may feature private docks, steps leading to the sound, peaceful water views, and beautiful sunset potential. These homes are especially appealing for guests interested in kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, or relaxing beside calmer waters.

Sound views are common with soundfront homes, but they are not guaranteed. Always check the property photos, map, description, and amenities before booking.

Canalfront Rentals

Canalfront rentals offer a unique waterfront experience along navigational canals in select Outer Banks neighborhoods. These homes are popular with boaters and water lovers looking for access to the sound, peaceful views, and a laid-back coastal setting.
